Women show more signs of stress than men

Women in the developed world are locked into a 'double shift' of home and work which leaves them with more symptoms of stress than men, research has shown.

They scored higher than men on back and neck pain in a survey, classic symptoms of stress, even when any physical cause was removed.

University of Gothenburg researchers distributed questionnaires to 627 female and 573 male students, and 870 female and 834 male computer workers.

They found in both groups women showed the symptoms more strongly than men.

During the four year study published in a post doctoral thesis, female students showed more neck pain, and amongst the workforce, women showed more signs of both back and neck pain.

Anna Grimby-Ekman, postdoctoral student and statistician at the Sahlgrenska Academy's Department of Public Health and Community Medicine said: "There is an ongoing debate amongst researchers as to why muscle and joint pain, such as neck pain, are so common, and why this seems to be more prevalent among women than men.
